It had been awhile since I walked down Houston Street. As I suspected, there wasn't much new happening -- street art-wise. I suppose only the most-committed are out there in this weather! But I did find a few stickers that looked fairly recent.

Installation in Progress
Chino and Nelson (aka Chief 69) began installing the next graf/street art exhibit in the "Staying Alive" series at Hamilton Fish Library. I was amazed by how proficient both were this time around -- only the second time they have ever done anything like this.

Twelph Sketch for "Staying Alive: Part II"
I am enjoying the bold colors and uncanny composition of Twelph's sketches as I scan them -- before we begin mounting them tomorrow for the next in the series of the "Staying Alive" exhibits at Hamilton Fish.

Waiting for the 4 Train
While waiting for a train in this city, the only time I'm checking out my surroundings -- rather than catching up on my reading -- is when I'm on the 2 or 4 line up in the Bronx. The layer upon layer of tags and bombs always staggers me!

Outside My Manhattan Mini-Storage
As I've been spending most of my time clearing out my house in Teaneck these days, I've been street-art starved! Today we headed into the city to store some more books, art and clothes. What a pleasant surprise to find this right outside my mini-storage space on West 57th Street!

Mid-town Sticker Art
Earlier this week, I was thinking just how few hand-drawn stickers I was seeing downtown --- "Hand-drawn stickers...A thing of the past!," I'd mused. But today in mid-town both Overconsumer and Jesus Saves proved me wrong. 'so glad!

Moriah's (aka Momo) stickers
My 16-year old intern has been creating the most intriguing stickers! I just had to scan them before they made their way to the public eye. Moriah is currently working on a number of non-sticker pieces for an upcoming exhibit at Hamilton Fish, NYPL.
That Door on Rivington Street
I noticed this character on that door on Rivington Street -- where I'd first discovered Swoon's work. Then we saw him pasted up in quite a few places while we were walking from Rivington over to Gallery 151 on the Bowery.

Sharp -- close up -- @ Gallery 151
'checked out the exhibit "Green Style" earlier this evening. Sharp's work mesmerized me -- as it often does. 'am curious about this -- as it's not the image I'd expect to see integrated into his wild-style graffiti. The only clue is the Hebrew "Aharon," as Sharp's name is Aaron Goodstone.
Spotted on the Upper West Side
Although there isn't much street art to be found in my neighborhood, I did spot these stickers along Broadway in the 70's while running errands these past few days.

We B*Girlz @ Lincoln Center, August, 2006
I just discovered a series of photos I took from a break-dancing event at Lincoln Center in August 2006. 'surprised to have them, as I almost never documented graffiti back then.

From Jason Mamarella's Black Book
'had a great time this afternoon checking out pages from Jason Mamarella's black books from the 90's. My intern, Moriah, especially loves Jason's characters. She scanned in quite a few of her favorites. This is among them. Thanks, Jason!

5Pointz, LIC
I finally had a chance to check out the photos that my son, Dani, took early last month at 5Pointz. This piece is my favorite. I love its wondrous flow and dynamic colors.

Found in Dani's Black Book
I found one of my son's black books from his early years at FIT -- anywhere between 1998-2001. This is among the tags I discovered.

From Dani's Black Books, 1992 - 2002
As I continued to empty out my house today in Teaneck, I came across some of my son's black books from the 90's. Here's a sampling:

From Kove's Black Book
Kove's black books are among my favorite. Whether his art work or some other writer's, the pieces and tags are among the most vibrant I've seen.

From Over's Black Book
I met Over up in the Bronx a few months back on my first visit to Da Bakery on Southern Blvd His knowledge of Bronx graffiti is as astounding as the black books he shared with me.

From Black Book of Young Writer in Paris
I guess I'm addicted to black books, as I approach strangers doing walls and ask for permission to check out their black books. I wish I remembered this writer's name -- who graciously allowed me to photograph this page
REUSE PROJECT 3 in Tel Aviv (OPENING TOMORROW!!!)
Quite an amazing list of participants. 'sorry I'm missing this.

From Juan Carlos Mejia's Sketch Book
I met Juan Carlos Mejia last year in Bogota. He was working on a wall -- that he was commissioned to do -- and I stopped to talk to him. This piece is among the many of his sketches that captivated me.
From Joshua Lutz's Black Book
Working 24/7 clearing out my home in Teaneck -- with no street art/graffiti anywhere in sight --, I'm turning to black book images to sustain me! I discovered Joshua Lutz's black book earlier this year at the Going Postal exhibit at Ad Hoc. This is one of a few pages that I photographed.

Found in Berner's Black Book -- late 80's
While clearing out my house in Teaneck and going through thousands of books, I came across a former student's black book. I remember Berner's passion for graf when I was his English teacher in the mid to late 80's on the Lower East Side. 'so cool to rediscover this so many years later.

In Back of Da Bakery
Besides all the cool art inside Da Bakery @ 1700 Southern Blvd in the Bronx, there's always something happening in the back. I came upon this earlier in the week. I love it!

Found in Spare2's Black Book
I met Spare2, a ninth grader at the High School of Art and Design, up at Da Bakery in the Bronx last night. I love meeting young, cool graffiti aficionados. At times like this, I miss teaching high school! Anyway, thanks, Spare2, for sharing your black book and all its great tags with me.

In the Bronx
Walking along Southern Blvd this afternoon, I saw more tags, throw-ups and bombs than I've seen just about anywhere else. Despite massive urban renewal, scenes like this -- reminiscent of some I recently saw in the non-gentrified sections of Bed-Stuy -- remain.

Charlotta Jansen @ NY Studio Gallery
I passed by Denise Carbonell's former spot on Stanton Street last week and came upon this exhibit in what is now the NY Studio Gallery. I was mesmerized by everything about it -- from its title, "Can't Live the Commonest Way On Six Bits a Day" to its subdued palette. 'so glad to discover Charlotta Janssen's images inspired by American photographs of poor and working-class Americans captured around the time of the Great Depression.

East Village Postal Sticker Art
While walking through the East Village yesterday, I discovered some stickers I hadn't seen anywhere else in town. In addition to the usual suspects such as Faust and Jesus Saves, there were stickers such as "Full Bleed" (center) that were new to me. My son, Dani, had told me that there are some hot stickers on St. Marks Place. He's right.

East Village Sidewalk Art
This caught my eye as was walking through the East Village earlier today. It reminds me of some of my creative writing lessons!

The Door on Rivington Street
When I first started documenting street art -- about two years ago -- this door on Rivington Street was one of the first sites I noticed. It was graced with a stunning Swoon piece. Since, it has gone through many reincarnations. This is the latest.

L'Atlas @ gallery nine5
I had received an email early last week from L'Atlas that he was in town for a solo exhibit @ gallery nine5 on Spring Street. I had seen his work this past summer in Paris. Though I never got to meet him, I went with my intern to the exhibit on Friday. 'found it quite mesmerizing. But I would have loved to see some of his work on the surrounding streets. The exhibit continues through Nov. 6th @ 24 Spring Street. 'would have loved, too, to take some photos of it, but that was against the gallery's policy. (A policy -- I think -- all galleries should rethink these days.)

Pasted Poems on SoHo Walls
Cool to see some poems pasted onto the walls of my city -- even when they're pasted onto street art. Gee -- my two favorite art forms converge.

Jerusalem Graffiti -- From Awhile Ago!
While going through old family pics from the 80's and 90's, I came across the photo. Interesting -- since I wasn't documenting graffiti at the time and did not pay all that attention to the surrounding walls.

Panel Discussion: "The Invisibles"
I attended a wonderful panel discussion yesterday at The Greene Space in SoHo. Titled "The Invisibles," it is described as "a discussion with four creators who travel among the unseen." 'so cool that Cekis was included. He spoke about his graffiti as "urban intervention" in his native Santiago, Chile and here in NYC. A brief slide show was presented of his work, as well. Pictured speaking in this photo is Anthony Papa, an artist, writer and advocate against the war on drugs. Art literally saved his life, as while in prison, he "painted his way to freedom."
Black Book Tags
All of these tags are from one of Nelson Seda's black books. Thanks, Moriah, for helping me with the scanning. And thanks, Nelson, for lending me the book. Too much fun!

Black Book Tags
'so much fun to discover at last night's opening of "Staying Alive" one of Nelson's black books -- filled up exclusively with tags. I am increasingly fascinated by the range of styles and skills.

D*Face @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery
I'm so glad I made it to this exhibit before it ends on Friday. I love the way London-based D*Face plays with images culled from popular culture, comic books and ads. Brilliant, provocative and fun!

from Keith Haring New York
While on the LES last week, I checked out the exhibit, "Keith Haring New York" at the Woodward Gallery. I found it far more interesting from a socio-cultural perspective than from an aesthetic one. This particular piece is from an LES door salvaged by Clayton Patterson. It is from a building in which both he and Keith Haring lived in the 80's. Notice the "Radiant Baby!"

Paris Graffiti
Sorting through the photos my daughter took on our trip to Paris this past summer, I came upon this one. The walls adjacent to the Fondation Cartier d’Art Contemporain became an open gallery for the city's taggers, bombers and graf writers. It was the perfect complement to its comprehensive homage to graffiti: "Born on the Streets."

Kindred Times and Future Good-Byes
Among the best artists anywhere are the four -- Know Hope, Klone, Foma and Zero Cents -- who collaborated on this project in an abandoned building in Tel Aviv. I would have loved to have been there! The photos sent by Klone are amazing. Check out their blogspot for more info: www.kindredtimes.blogspot.com

MEMORIA CANALLA at MUSEO DE BOGOTÁ
The most vibrant and authentic exhibit of street art/graffiti I have ever seen, MEMORIA CANALLA continues through Setember 30th at CASA VIRREY SÁMANO*Carrera 4 # 10 - 18 (La Candelaria). This photo consists of an installation of sticker collages on LP's. Stinkfish tells me that the entire exhibit is chiefly his and Bastardilla's conception. Brilliant!
